Exquisite Corpse: a selection of words or images, collectively assembled.
During the early part of the last century, Surrealist artists used this concept as the basis for a parlor game by which one person would draw on paper, fold it to conceal part of the drawing and pass it to the next player who would continue the drawing using only the part that was exposed.
Unlike the Surrealists, the video artists in this series did not collaborate on our show, but through curation, we have attempted to find design elements or key concepts that connect the artworks in unexpected and amusing ways. Make sure you’re there to follow this very bizarre train of thought!
Thank you to everyone who came out to support Project Bandaloop and the Great Wall last weekend during the amazing “Bound(less)” street party extravaganza!
And thank you to Project Bandaloop for choosing the Great Wall as the location for your 20th anniversary party and for sharing your beautiful work with the city of Oakland! Please come again

Last month, we presented “About Oakland, By Oakland”, an entire show dedicated to this great city and the artists who live and work here.
This month, we’re bouncing off the theme of “place” and taking you on a “Tour of the World” stopping off in such places as Kenya, India, France, Iceland and maybe a stop or two around home.
And you don’t even have to pack any luggage!

The title of this show says it all. This month on the Wall, watch as predators discover their prey and find adventure within the hunt. Don’t be fooled - this is not a screening of films one would expect to see on a nature channel but a series of artistic takes on what happens between those doing the chasing and those being sought.
All eleven films differ wildly in their stylistic approach, as well as, the natural realms they explore. It’s a non-violent screening perfect for the whole family.
In case you missed Project Bandaloop breath-taking choreography on the Great Wall last summer, you have another chance to see their amazing work this month. Here is their upcoming rehearsal schedule, so make sure to stop by and give a cheer:
June 23, 2011 – 2-6PM
June 24, 2011 – 10-2PM
| July 1, 2010 8:00 pm | to | July 1, 2011 11:00 pm |
For the second July in a row, the Great Wall will be screening a collection of awe-inspiring films entitled “Projects of Summertime”. As the title suggests, these short documentary-style shorts capture the creative, whimsical, fantastic and far-out projects people find the time to do when the whole world slows down for the blissful summer months.
In this hour-long show, there’s something for everyone – from DIY projects like couture knitting to thrill-chasing sports like free running – don’t miss out!
The Great Wall of Oakland is off on a holiday vacation, but we will be back!
Thank you to all the amazing artists around the world who have generously allowed us to their screen motion artworks and short films during our 11 shows this year. And thanks to Project Bandaloop for celebrating their 20th anniversary with us.
It’s been an incredible 2011. Check back soon for updates on all the exciting shows planned for 2012
Happy Holidays!
Due to the recent events in downtown Oakland, the Great Wall has decided not to participate in Friday’s Art Murmur.

‘Tis the season for fright!
This first Friday, the Great Wall of Oakland presents “Fright Night”, a curated selection of dark and creepy videos that are sure to delight your dark-side.
The videos explore ‘fear’ from a variety of perspectives – from the cultural influences of modern cinema to the purely visual elicitation of shock, all the way to a scientific exploration of fear by delving into things – spiders, deep waters, and the unknown – that generally scare us all.
While this show is sure to spook, it is appropriate for the whole family. Bring a chair or a blanket and be prepared to jump!
